From Principle to Practice: Four Conceptions of Interpretation

Abstract: This multiple case study examined cultural interpretive programs for four different sets of goals or conceptions in a trickle-down effect from theory to practice. A proposed model, Four Conceptions of Interpretation, is based on foundational texts and empirical studies. “…Most current studies on interpretation effectiveness focus on visitor satisfaction, knowledge gain, behavioral change, or influential factors (Benton, 2009; Machnik et al., 2006; Munro et al., 2008; Weiler and Ham, 2010). “…Aquaria, zoos, museums and parks provide excellent opportunities for visitor empowerment and education with respect to natural history, living organisms, and environmental issues. Many interpretive displays and programs in these settings aim to connect visitors with new information or resources, promote environmental literacy, or influence behaviors to augment environmental stewardship (Benton, 2009). Educational exhibits and programs at these facilities can stimulate conservation interest, awareness, enthusiasm, and advocacy (Briseño-Garzón et al, 2007;Falk & Adelman, 2003;Jensen et al, 2017;Wyles et al, 2013).…”
