Frontier of continuous structural health monitoring system for short & medium span bridges and condition assessment

Abstract: It is becoming an important social problem to make maintenance and rehabilitation of existing short and medium span(10-20m) bridges because there are a huge amount of short and medium span bridges in service in the world. The kernel of such bridge management is to develop a method of safety(condition) assessment on items which include remaining life and load carrying capacity. Bridge health monitoring using information technology and sensors is capable of providing more accurate knowledge of bridge performance… Show more

“…They also allow knowing the historical global behavior of the bridges to evidence degradation tendencies, instead of only detect the effects of extreme events, such as collisions or environmental attacks (strong-motion earthquakes or hurricanes). 21 The SHM of bridges evaluates their integrity, and also includes the analysis of remaining life and its load-carrying capacity. Data collected are used to optimize the operation, maintenance, and repair of bridges.…”

“…They applied the Analytic Hierarchy Process AHP to analyze the data from multiple sources and set a safety alarm threshold for the bridge during construction. Miyamoto et al 21 proposed an early warning method for bridge safety using wireless sensor network technology. The method showed satisfactory results in various performance indicators such as flood delay, energy efficiency and throughput.…”
