The catalytic pyrolysis of lignites is a technical process whose development is complex and timeconsuming with the goal to maximize the yield of the desired low-volatile hydrocarbons of choice and to minimize the yield of solid residual products. Not every type of lignite is suitable for this process due to its particular chemical composition. In order to be able to predict which lignite specimen will be an especially promising raw material for the pyrolytic liberation of target products, the chemical classification by IR spectroscopic methods was investigated. MIR spectroscopy has been demonstrated to be a valuable tool to characterize the the molecular composition of lignites and to determine the concentrations of aliphatic and aromatic functional groups in lignite as well as alcoholic OH and other forms of bound oxygen. These data provide a comprehensive chemical characterization of the material and help to predict the composition of the chemical components liberated by catalytic decomposition. With a complementary NIR spectroscopic approach, a chemometric method has been developed with which the elemental composition of the lignites can be determined in a fast and pragmatic way leading to a prediction of the product range of a theoretical pyrolytic product range. Thus, this spectroscopic investigation is a toolbox that can answer the question if the commercial exploitation of catalytic pyrolysis of a lignite sample in question will make sense without preliminary conduction of long and time-consuming testing.

The quest for a suitable biomaterial for medical application and tissue regeneration has resulted in the extensive research of surface functionalization of material. Poly(3-hydroxybutyrate-co-4-hydroxybutyrate) [P(3HB-co-4HB)] is a bacterial polymer well-known for its high levels of biocompatibility, non-genotoxicity, and minimal tissue response. We have designed a porous antimicrobial silver SSD blend/poly(3HB-co-4HB)-collagen peptide scaffold using a combination of simple techniques to develop a scaffold with an inter-connected microporous pore in this study. The collagen peptide was immobilised via -NH2 group via aminolysis. In order to improve the antimicrobial performance of the scaffold, silver sulfadiazine (SSD) was impregnated in the scaffolds. To confirm the immobilised collagen peptide and SSD, the scaffold was characterized using FTIR. Herein, based on the cell proliferation assay of the L929 fibroblast cells, enhanced bioactivity of the scaffold with improved wettability facilitated increased cell proliferation. The antimicrobial activity of the SSD blend/P(3HB-co-4HB)-collagen peptide in reference to the pathogenic Gram-negative, Gram-positive bacteria and yeast Candida albicans exhibited SSD blend/poly(3HB-co-4HB)-12.5 wt% collagen peptide as significant construct of biocompatible antibacterial biomaterials. Thus, SSD blend/P(3HB-co-4HB)-collagen peptide scaffold from this finding has high potential to be further developed as biomaterial.

Impact- and Thermal-Resistant Epoxy Resin Toughened with Acacia Honey

High performance polymers with bio-based modifiers are promising materials in terms of applications and environmental impact. In this work, raw acacia honey was used as a bio-modifier for epoxy resin, as a rich source of functional groups. The addition of honey resulted in the formation of highly stable structures that were observed in scanning electron microscopy images as separate phases at the fracture surface, which were involved in the toughening of the resin. Structural changes were investigated, revealing the formation of a new aldehyde carbonyl group. Thermal analysis confirmed the formation of products that were stable up to 600 °C, with a glass transition temperature of 228 °C. An energy-controlled impact test was performed to compare the absorbed impact energy of bio-modified epoxy containing different amounts of honey with unmodified epoxy resin. The results showed that bio-modified epoxy resin with 3 wt% of acacia honey could withstand several impacts with full recovery, while unmodified epoxy resin broke at first impact. The absorbed energy at first impact was 2.5 times higher for bio-modified epoxy resin than it was for unmodified epoxy resin. In this manner, by using simple preparation and a raw material that is abundant in nature, a novel epoxy with high thermal and impact resistance was obtained, opening a path for further research in this field.
