Ftors Associated with Hopelessness: A Population Study

Abstract: This study demonstrated a moderately high prevalence of hopelessness at the population level. Hopelessness appears to be an important indicator of low subjective well-being in the general population that health care personnel should pay attention to.

“…In addition, the relatively large non-response rate may have led to an underestimation of the effects of violence. it is noteworthy that the present hopelessness figures were similar to those found in community/general population samples (e.g., [29][30][31], but some of the men had high hopelessness levels, previously associated with decreased well-being in mental patients and community/general population samples (e.g., 30,31,49), not the least in Sweden (49) and Finland (30).…”

“…We also addressed associations between violence, hopelessness and burnout. Hopelessness may not be uncommon in community/general population samples and has been connected to factors such as poor subjective health and health among lifetime victimized men reduced self-confidence (e.g., [29][30][31]. Victimized men may experience acts of abuse as intrusive, uncontrollable and harmful, and they may feel helpless.…”

“…According to Beck and Steer (1989), hopeless individuals believe that they will not be able to correct anything which is right and important for themselves, will not be able to succeed anything they endeavor to do, will never be able to attain their important goals and targets and will never be able to solve bad and negative problems. At this point, it is seen that research on hopelessness which is expressed to be a useful indicator of a low level subjective well-being (Haatainen et al, 2004) and life satisfaction were conducted on different populations. For example, studies conducted on the overall population (Haatainen et al, 2004) and hemodialysis patients (Erdem, Karabulutlu, Okanlı and Tan, 2004) and students (Gençay and Gençay, 2011;Gündoğar, Sallan-Gül, Uskun, Demirci and Keçeci, 2007;Masal, 2012;Steenwyk, Atkins, Bedics and Whitley, 2010;Tümkaya, Çelik and Aybek, 2011) have reported that hopelessness has a negatively meaningful relation with life satisfaction and is found to be a meaningful predictor of the latter and that hopelessness decreases when life satisfaction increases.…”

It is striking that only Tümkaya, Çelik and Aybek's (2011) study from amongst these research studies conducted on students were on high school students, whereas others were conducted on university students.…”

“…Evidence of depression, hopelessness, helplessness, worthlessness, guilt, and suicidal ideation should prompt a comprehensive evaluation. Hopelessness can be profiled as an important indicator of low subjective wellbeing in the general population and should be recognized in everyday mental health work [Haatainen et al, 2004]. Underlying reasons for hopelessness may be related to fears of painful death, poor symptom management, or feelings of abandonment [Breitbart et al, 1998].…”
