FUBOCO: Structure Synthesis of Basic Op-Amps by FUnctional BlOck COmposition

Abstract: This paper presents a method to automatically synthesize the structure and initial sizing of an operational amplifier. It is positioned between approaches with fixed design plans and a small search space of structures and approaches with generic structural production rules and a large search space with technically impractical structures. The presented approach develops a hierarchical composition graph based on functional blocks that spans a search space of thousands of technically meaningful structure variants… Show more

“…This methodology is flexible in terms of circuit classes, technology nodes, and performance measurements, but generates many meaningless interim structures. A similar open-source design methodology based on the functional block is FUBOCO [15]. A library for different functional stages (bias, load, differential pair, etc.)…”

“…No systematic implementation methods were provided in Abel et al 4 Therefore, it is unclear whether this language is adequate for use in cell library query, model generation, and symbolic design equation generation. Application to sizing of Abel's recognition method 4 is extended in Abel et al 26 and to topological synthesis in Abel et al 27 Integration of these methods with an advanced symbolic tool for macromodeling and pole‐zero generation is still missing. Also, no evidence has been provided whether the aforementioned methods could be combined with the gm/ID sizing method for autosizing.…”

“…Based on the behavioral models, op-amps are automatically sized using constraint programming. [2] presents a new method to synthesize the structure, i.e., netlist, of an op-amp for a given set of performance specifications. It is based on the functional block library presented in this paper and the performance models of [1].…”
