Full‐scale evaluation of biological nitrogen removal in the step‐feed activated sludge process

Abstract: Establishment of nitrification and denitrification in an existing conventional, step‐feed activated sludge plant designed for suspended solids and carbonaceous biochemical oxygen demand removal was evaluated in a full‐scale study at the Tallman Island Water Pollution Control Plant in New York City. One of four biological treatment batteries consisting of an aeration tank and two rectangular secondary clarifiers was isolated from the rest of the plant and was used for the study. Nitrification rates and their te… Show more

“…process as an effective option to enhance TN removal by stepwise introduction of the influent to the nitrified liquid, thus making more efficient use of the influent carbon source for denitrification (Fillos et al, 1996;Fujii, 1996 , 2011). In this study, step-feeding was adopted as the key strategy aimed to enhance the TN removal performance for a four stages AlS-TFCWs.…”

“…However, recent results indicate that it can be adapted easily to biological nitrogen removal (Kayser, et al, 1992;Fillos, et al, 1996), and that it can also be adapted to biological phosphorus removal (Newbry, et al, 1997;Nolasco, et al, 1995;Nolasco, et al, 1993). Figure 6 illustrates a four pass step feed bioreactor configured for biological nitrogen removal.…”

“…Los valores obtenidos son similares a los indicados por otros autores (Alleman e Irvine, 1980a;Silverstein y Schroeder, 1983;Palis & Irvine, 1985;Jones et al, 1990;Randall et al, 1992;Harremoës & Sinkjaer, 1995;Fdez-Polanco et al, 1996;Fillos et al, 1996;Hao & Huang, 1996) observándose que, en general, las velocidades específicas de nitrificación son mayores que las de desnitrificación.…”
