Fully integrated electrically driven optical frequency comb at communication wavelength

Abstract: To meet the high demand of data transmission capacity, optical communications systems have been developed. In order to increase the channel numbers for larger communication bandwidth, multi-mode lasers and laser arrays can be used. As an alternative coherent light source, optical frequency comb (OFC) contains multi-wavelength signal, and hence enables communication with data stream of tens of terabit/s. Fully integrated electrically driven OFCs are expected as a compact, robust, and low-cost light source for d… Show more

“…OFC has been applied in precision measurement, [246] microwave photonics, [247][248][249] and optical frequency synthesis. [250][251][252] The multispectral property of chip-scale OFC enables its application in communication systems and optical interconnect in data centers, [253][254][255] as a compact alternative for multiwavelength laser or laser diode array. The transmission of a data stream of >50 terabit s −1 on 179 optical carriers has been reported, [253] while the pump source is still off chip.…”

“…[254] A lot of developments can be done to implement a compact integrated soliton frequency comb for communications. [255] Second, for RE-doped lasers, although having advantages of low noise, high thermal stability, and large-scale integration on CMOS line, their limitation is on optical pumping scheme. The electrically pumped RE-doped LED has been demonstrated by using different host materials such as SRO and SRN, [240,241] while the realization of electrically pumped RE-doped laser still requires significant development effort.…”

“…[66,[96][97][98][99] Contributed by the nonlinear optical properties of the materials on integrated photonics platform, chip-scale OFCs have been demonstrated and investigated. [100][101][102] Recently, integrated OFCs have also been used as light source for LiDAR sensing. [1,2,30,103] In this section, recent research progress of Li-DAR sensors using integrated OFCs is reviewed.…”

“…Nowadays, OFCs have been recognized as potential multi-wavelength sources used in optical communication field, which can provide up to thousands of optical channels from single comb laser applied in dense wavelength-division multiplexing (DWDM) systems [20,[28][29][30]. However, the traditional OFC-based technologies mainly rely on the bulky, power-hungry, complex, and expensive equipment to generate the comb lines, which will seriously restrict the application of them.…”
