Background: With the increase in communication technologies, the internet has become an indispensable tool in the life of the individual. Several studies report on the advantages of this resource; however, there is still a group of individuals who use the internet excessively. The aim of this study was to explore the relationships between internet addiction, daytime sleepiness, and family communication in adolescents. Methods: A total of 340 adolescents aged between 12 and 17 years participated in this study. All completed the sociodemographic questionnaire, the internet addiction test, the pediatric daytime sleepiness scale, and the family communication scale. Results: The results indicate that 64.1% of the adolescents had mild to moderate addiction to the internet. The main results suggest that internet addiction in adolescents is negatively associated with family communication and positively associated with excessive daytime sleepiness. It was also observed that gender had a significant effect on daytime sleepiness, with female participants having more excessive daytime sleepiness. Regarding age, the results indicate higher values of internet addiction among younger adolescents. Conclusions: In view of the above, it is considered important to develop preventive actions with a view to healthy family communication, with the adoption of sleep hygiene habits and the promotion of healthy use of the internet.

La flexibilidad psicológica es la capacidad de reaccionar ante ciertas situaciones de acuerdo a los valores optados de una manera plena y consciente; por otro lado, la funcionalidad familiar es el tipo de relación que los miembros de una familia tienen entre sí. El objetivo de la investigación fue determinar la relación entre flexibilidad psicológica y funcionalidad familiar en adolescentes, en una muestra de 115 estudiantes con una edad comprendida entre 13 a 18 años. Se realizó un estudio cuantitativo, de corte transversal, no experimental y de tipo correlacional; se aplicó el Test de Funcionamiento Familiar (FFSIL) para evaluar funcionamiento familiar y el Cuestionario de Aceptación y Acción -AAQ II para evaluar flexibilidad psicológica. Los resultados obtenidos determinaron que no existe relación entre flexibilidad psicológica y funcionalidad familiar (Rho=0.024 p>0.05), además, se evidencio diferencias significativas entre las puntuaciones medias de puntuación de flexibilidad psicológica según el género femenino (M=28,6) y masculino (M=23,6). Por lo tanto, se concluye que las variables antes mencionadas en la muestra son independientes, ya que no tienen relación.

IntroductionExcessive internet and mobile cell phone use has been increasing in recent years especially in teenagers who are a vulnerable population. However, there is a lack of psychometric evaluation of instruments that allow to identify behavior regarding problematic use of the internet and cell phones in the Latin America, particularly in Ecuador. The main aim of this study is to examine the psychometric properties of two instruments: the Internet-related experiences questionnaire (IREQ) and Mobile-related experiences questionnaire (MREQ) in high school students (n = 4, 174, Mage = 15.63; 51.19% male and 48.37% female).MethodsThe validation process was performed using one and two factors for both questionnaires according to previous literature. After checking the models proposed to date, the best fit model was the one-factor model for (IREQ) and one-factor model for (MREQ).Results and discussionThe invariance was performed using two samples according to gender (male, female) and has been confirmed with an acceptable internal consistency for both questionnaires. For IREQ (All, ω = 0.80; Male, ω = 0.77; Female, ω = 0.82) and for MREQ (All, ω = 0.83; Male, ω = 0.82; Female, ω = 0.84). In addition, we performed the correlation analysis between IREQ, MREQ, and socio-demographic variables and finally, both instruments demonstrated strong psychometric qualities within the local population.
