Functional divergence and intron variability during evolution of angiosperm TERMINAL FLOWER1 (TFL1) genes

Abstract: The protein encoded by the TERMINAL FLOWER1 (TFL1) gene maintains indeterminacy in inflorescence meristem to repress flowering, and has undergone multiple duplications. However, basal angiosperms have one copy of a TFL1-like gene, which clusters with eudicot TFL1/CEN paralogs. Functional conservation has been reported in the paralogs CENTRORADIALIS (CEN) in eudicots, and ROOTS CURL IN NPA (RCNs) genes in monocots. In this study, long-term functional conservation and selective constraints were found between ang… Show more

“…Our results also recover a eudicot specific duplication resulting in the EudiCEN-like and EudiTFL1-like copies (Figure 4). All monocot TFL1-like homologs are clustered in the MonTFL1-like clade (Figure 4) consistent to what has been previously reported (Liu et al, 2016;Gao et al, 2017).…”

“…FT and TFL1 played important roles in flowering induction (Gao et al, 2017;Putterill & Varkonyi-Gasic, 2016). The expressions of PbFT and TFL1 homologues (gene23124 and gene16540) in pear buds showed the opposite expression patterns before and in the critical period of the flower bud differentiation.…”

“…The TFL1 ancestor underwent two separate duplication events in the common ancestor of angiosperms, which created three lineages corresponding to TFL1, BROTHER OF FT AND TFL1 (BFT), and the CENTRORADIALIS homolog (ATC or CEN) [10]. The TFL1/BFT/CEN-like genes control inflorescence meristem identity and delay transition to the reproductive phase [11] and are involved in growth and dormancy cycles [12], and seasonality of flowering in perennials [13,14]. Furthermore, the proteins from the TFL1/CEN/BFT-like subfamily can act as anti-florigen, a transmissible flowering repressor [15].…”
