“…S3). Previous study on crustacean zooplankton in the SYS also revealed the dominance of free spawners, the dynamics of which were driven by hydrological seasonality (Li et al 2022). It has been reported that free spawners dominate in coastal regions, for example, the coastal region of the Southwestern Atlantic (Da Conceição et al 2021) exhibit high fecundity and egg-laying in environments with high Chl a (Bunker and Hirst 2004).…”

“…Thus, current feeding herbivores may be more advantageous, as observed in these two stations. In terms of reproduction mode, high turbidity facilitates egg-brooders to avoid visual predators (Holliday & Lawrence, 2001) but reduces the survival rate of free-spawners egg (Li et al, 2022), which may explain that egg-brooder dominated in the two stations in summer and station 2-1 in winter-spring when turbidity is high, while broadcast spawners dominated in the two stations in autumn and station 2-2 in winter-spring when the salinity wedge was far away. We further clustered taxon into functional groups and analysed the seasonality of functional structure of zooplankton.…”

“…Changjiang River estuary, functional diversity, functional group, seasonality, trait, zooplankton Li et al, 2010). Despite increasing studies have revealed the zooplankton dynamics in China's marginal seas, to our best knowledge, trait-based approach has rarely been used (Li et al, 2022;Zhang et al, 2021)…”

“…Studies regarding zooplankton functional traits mainly focus on freshwater habitats and crustaceans, probably due to the high abundance and wide geographical distribution of these animals (Barnett et al, 2007;Vogt et al, 2013;Hebert and Beisner, 2021). Recently, studies in marine waters have offered an integrative approach to the function of zooplankton communities (Pomerleau et al, 2015;Li et al, 2022). In estuaries, field observations indicated that major changes in composition and diversity of zooplankters occur at 25 psu salinity level (Li et al, 2006).…”
