“…In addition, there is no correlation between the IOTN grade of a presenting malocclusion and functional or quality-of-life improvement after treatment, and some of the functional indications for orthognathic treatment are not included 37. The Index of Orthognathic Functional Treatment Need was developed to overcome some of these limitations 37,38…”

“…When the IOFTN used to asses the functional needs in the present sample, subjects with Class III sagittal skeletal patterns or malocclusions demonstrated higher percentages of grade 5 IOFTN scores (62.2% and 59.6%), compared to Class II sagittal skeletal patterns or malocclusions (18.9% and 21.2%). [26] The distribution of functional needs between malocclusions or sagittal skeletal patterns were also different ( P < 0.01). [26]…”

“…Based on these findings and study models, we extracted the index of orthodontic treatment need (IOTN), which was showing a definite treatment need with dental health component (DHC) of grade 5 and esthetic component of grade 8. Moreover, we also calculated the index of orthognathic functional treatment need for this patient, which is derived from DHC of IOTN,[91011] and it was grade 5.2. Meaning that this patient with same cephalometric features and skeletal deformity as well as occlusal traits in adulthood would have needed orthognathic surgery; however, considering the growing state of patient, we decided to proceed with the Twin Block appliance therapy.…”
