Functional outcomes of uni-knee arthroplasty for medial compartment knee arthropathy in asian patients

Abstract: Background: Uni-knee arthroplasty (UKA) has shown better knee kinematics and motion that may better suit the activities of daily living in Eastern countries. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the functional outcomes of UKA for medial compartment knee arthropathy in Asian patients. Methods:The study cohort consisted of 48 patients with 51 UK A knees. Only one type of prosthesis was used and all components were cemented. Postoperative management included ambulation with weight bearing, range of motion, a… Show more

“…Indeed, to our knowledge, the UKA survivorship rate of 98.8% is the highest reported rate in the literature at this early time point of any large cohort studies (Table 3 [11,12,51,52]). In this study, a patient satisfaction rate of 92% was found at 2.5-year follow-up, which is similar to other cohort studies that reported UKA satisfaction scores of overall knee function at two-year follow-up (91.5%, Table 4 [5362]) and higher than the satisfaction rates of registry data (85.0%, Table 4 [12,51,63]).…”

“…Wong et al [24] investigate the functional outcome and patient satisfaction following uni-knee arthoplasty, which is an increasingly popular treatment option among qualifying patients requiring knee replacement surgery. An impressive 98% of the 48 patients surveyed were satisfied with the operation when asked 2-6 years later.…”

“…Recent studies have reported that the long‐term survival of UKA is similar to that of total knee arthroplasty (TKA) [5, 11, 17, 20]. There are also several reports of better functional outcomes after UKA than after TKA [2, 7, 9, 16, 28]. In particular, a recent report suggested that patients who undergo UKA are more likely to forget that they have an artificial joint in daily life than patients who undergo TKA [30].…”
