Functional terpolymers containing vinylphosphonic acid: The synthesis and characterization of poly(vinylphosphonic acid‐co‐styrene‐co‐maleic anhydride)

Abstract: Novel functional temperature-sensitive amphiphilic P-containing polymers were synthesized by complex-radical ternary polymerization of vinylphosphonic acid (VPA), styrene (S), and maleic anhydride (MA). Charge transfer complexes (CTCs), complex-formation constants (K c ) between acceptor and donor monomer systems and the complexed monomer reactivity ratios were investigated by 1 H-NMR analysis. Contrary to theoretical predictions, the VPA. . .S complex is more active as compared to MA. . .S complex in the tern… Show more

“…Furthermore, the decrease of over 200 °C is attributed to the carbonization of the alkyl main chain. 31,32) As for PS, dramatic degradation is observed over 350 °C attributed to the decomposition of PS evaporation. 33,34) Finally, the powder sample of P(VPA/ 1PIm)-b-PS shows a slight decrease of 10% to 350 °C assigned to P(VPA/1PIm).…”

“…Furthermore, the larger the gap between r 1 and r 2 is, the greater the difference is. Kavlak et al studied the mechanism of the ternary copolymerization of citraconic anhydride, styrene, and vinyl phosphonic acid. They simplified the ternary system as a binary system based on the electron‐donating/accepting effect of the monomer.…”

“…With the use of (NH 4 ) 2 S 2 O 8 initiated free-radical polymerization in aqueous media, random terpolymers of VPA, acrylonitrile, and methyl acrylate were synthesized [ 103 ]. Poly(vinylphosphonic acid-co-styrene-co-maleic anhydride) was obtained using AIBN as an initiator and DMSO as a solvent [ 104 ]. Water-soluble initiator was used in the random copolymerization of VPA with 5-(methacryloylamido)tetrazole [ 105 ].…”
