Abstract: This might account for epidemiological differences in the predisposition to diseases and drug response among Basques and could be used to design and interpret genetic association studies for this particular population.

“…To analyze GSTA1*-69C/T (rs3957357) polymorphism the RFLP-PCR technique was used, as described in our previous studies [23]. To ensure the reliability of the results, about 15% of the samples were randomly selected and independently analyzed by direct sequencing.…”

“…The effect of these variants in influencing disease risk was evaluated with respect to different pathologic conditions: endocrinologic (Amer et al, ; Mastana et al, ), neurologic (Kiyohara et al, ; Piacentini et al, ), cardiovascular (Polimanti et al, ; Tang et al, ), pregnancy related (Polimanti et al, ), infertility related (Safarinejad et al, ), and allergic disease related (Minelli et al, ; Piacentini et al, ). In addition to their putative involvement in different pathologic conditions, several studies have shown that these genetic variants appear at varying frequencies among human populations (Iorio et al, ; Polimanti et al, ). This observation suggests that these variants may influence variability in disease predisposition among human populations (Myles et al, ).…”

“…Glutathione-S-transferases (GSTs) are a group of enzymes with antioxidant and detoxifying functions and mainly present in the liver [ 58 ]. GSTs catalyze the detoxification of electrophilic xenobiotics and inactivate a variety of endogenous oxidation by-products, which play a vital role in the antioxidant defense mechanism [ 59 , 60 ].…”
