Fungal endophytes isolated from the leaves of a medicinal plant, Ocimum sanctum Linn and evaluation of their antimicrobial activities

Abstract: The endophytic fungi isolated from leaves of Ocimum sanctum Linn. of different ages were examined for antimicrobial activity. The agar plug diffusion assay was used for primary screening. A total of 148 fungal endophytes were successfully isolated and cultured but only 134 of them (90.5%) exhibited inhibitory activity towards at least one test microorganisms. Moreover, the colonization rate indicated that the old leaves were frequently and densely colonized by endophytes. The results suggested that healthy lea… Show more

“…M a ny re p o r t s h ave s h o w n t h e effectiveness of the endophytic fungal extracts against MRSA. We have reported the potential of Lasiodiplodia pseudotheobromae IBRL OS-64, an endophytic fungus isolated from leaf of Ocimum sanctum Linn which possess anti-MRSA activity (Taufiq and Darah, 2018a;2018b). The ethyl acetate extract of the fungus has shown significance effects on the MRSA cells and proven to have bactericidal effect.…”

“…The study reflected that fungal crude ethyl acetate extract of fungal isolates from the healthy leaves at older stages cultured on yeast extract sucrose broth showed best antimicrobial activity than others cultured on malt extract broth [ 177 ]. A fungal isolate, Lasiodiplodia pseudotheobromae from the leaf of Ocimum sanctum Linn.…”

“…Different concentration of secondary metabolites viz., 10, 20, 30, 40 µl was poured into the wells and sterile water was used as control. The experiment was repeated three times and inoculated plates were kept at 28℃ for 48-72h [14]. The anti-oomycete activity was confirmed by the formation of a clear zone around the well.…”

“…But few reports are there on antibacterial properties of secondary metabolites of Lasiodiplodia sp. Taufiq and Darah [14] reported that crude metabolite of L. pseudotheobromae IBRL OS-64 exhibited antibacterial activity against 13 human pathogenic bacteria. Among them, MRSA ATCC 33591, Staphylococcus aureus and Streptococcus mutans a gram-positive bacteria found most susceptible with an inhibition zone of ≥21 mm.…”
