This study aimed to investigate the antifungal activity of seeds of Abrus precatorius L., Datura metel L. and Diploknema butyracea (Roxb.) H.J. Lam against common phytopathogenic fungi. The powdered seeds were extracted by Soxhlet extraction method using methanol as a solvent. Antifungal activity was performed by poison agar technique with different concentrations ranging from 5 to 20% of seed extracts against two fungal pathogens - Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. cubense R4 (FocR4) and Rhizoctonia spp. Among three plant seed methanolic extracts at 5% concentration, D. metel seeds showed significant inhibition with 69.81±3.30% percentage inhibition of diameter growth (PIDG) against FocR4 on 8th day and 77.51±3.00% PIDG Rhizoctonia spp. on 5th day. All the plant seed extracts showed complete inhibition against mycelial growth at ≤10% concentration. UV-visible spectroscopy spectra showed the peaks at 238 nm and 280 nm wavelengths for the seed extracts of A. precatorius L., and D. metel L., respectively while D. butyracea (Roxb.) H.J. Lam showed the peaks at 206 nm and 262 nm. These peaks were assumed to represent the antifungal compounds. The antifungal activity of the plant extracts could be attributed by the phytochemicals present in crude seed extracts. Although further studies are necessary, our data indicate that seeds of the examined three plants are potential biofungicides which could substitute for chemical fungicides.

Insecticides derived from plants provide environmentally friendly and sustainable options as alternatives to synthetic chemicals. This investigation delves into the insecticidal capabilities of two distinct Datura species, namely, Datura alba and Datura stramonium, in combatting significant pests such asSpodoptera litura, Bemesia tabaci, andCallosobruchus maculatus. Datura plants have a well-documented history of medicinal use and are recognized for their abundant Tropane alkaloid content, which acts as an innate defense mechanism against pests. Hence, the current investigation involved the extraction of chemical compounds from the leaves, flowers, seeds, and roots of both Datura stramonium and Datura alba. Subsequently, these extracts were assessed for efficacy using Spodoptera litura larvae, Bemesia tabaci, andCallosobruchus maculatusin bioassays. The larvicidal experiments encompassed a range of concentrations (3%, 5%, 10%), with larval mortality being documented at multiple time intervals: 6, 12, 24, 48, and 72 hours. The findings from our investigation uncover the notable insecticidal attributes of root, leaf, flower, and seed extracts from bothDatura albaandDatura stramoniumagainst these larvae. These extracts demonstrated distinct mortality rates at various concentrations and exposure durations. This comprehensive analysis imparts crucial knowledge regarding the insecticidal qualities of Datura species and their prospective contributions to sustainable pest control practices. The observed effectiveness of these plant extracts against a spectrum of significant pests hints at their potential as ecological alternatives within integrated pest management strategies.

Ascochyta rabiei (Pass.) Lab. is a highly destructive pathogen of chickpea. In thisstudy, leaf extract of Eucalyptus citriodora was assessed against this pathogen. Bioassays withmethanolic extract (0, 05, 1.0, 1.5, …, 4.0%) extract revealed the remarkable antifungal potential ofleaf extract where 69–94% reduction in biomass of A. rabiei was recorded. Chloroform fraction of thisextract was separated by partitioning the extract in a separating funnel. Using a solvent system ofchloroform: n-hexane (20:80), three compounds were detected on TLC plate which were separatedthrough preparative TLC and purified on HPLC. GC-MS of the purified compounds lead to theidentification of 3-cyclohexene- 1-ol, 4-methyl-1-(1-methylethyl)- (1), 1-cyclohexene- 1carboxaldehyde,4-(1-methylethyl)- (2) and eucalyptol (3) that might caused antifungal activity of the extract.
