“…Attempts to train honey bees to pollen ofseveral Gramineae have been unsuccessful (von Frisch, 1923), although there are a few species from which bees do collect pollen (Vansell, 1941;Bogdan, 1962;Soderstrom and Calderon, 1971;Terrell and Batra, 1984). Pollen of many species has been shown to display anti-fungal activity (Char and Bhat, 1975;Pandey et al, 1983;Tripathi, Dubey, and Dixit, 1985) and, in a few cases, pollen allelopathy (Kanchan and Jayachandra, 1980; Thomson, Andrews, and Plowright, 1982). Chemicals implicated in these protective functions might well reside in the pollenkitt and involve phenolics (Zucker, 1983), detected in several species both here and by others (Bernhardt, 1984;Knox, 1984), and heterocyclic nitrogen compounds, which in pollen may include toxic alkaloids (Stanley and Linskens, 1974;O'Neal and Waller, 1984).…”
