The Schmidt hammer is a useful tool applied by geomorphologists to measure rock strength in fi eld conditions. The essence of fi eld application is to obtain a suffi ciently large dataset of individual rebound values, which yields a meaningful numerical value of mean strength. Although there is general agreement that a certain minimum sample size is required to proceed with the statistics, the choice of size (i.e. number of individual impacts) was usually intuitive and arbitrary. In this paper we show a simple statistical method, based on the two-sample Student's t-test, to objectively estimate the minimum number of rebound measurements. We present the results as (1) the 'mean' and 'median' solutions, each providing a single estimate value, and (2) the empirical probability distribution of such estimates based on many fi eld samples. Schmidt hammer data for 14 lithologies, 13-81 samples for each, with each sample consisting of 40 individual readings, have been evaluated, assuming different significance levels. The principal recommendations are: (1) the recommended minimum sample size for weak and moderately strong rock is 25; (2) a sample size of 15 is suffi cient for sandstones and shales; (3) strong and coarse rocks require 30 readings at a site; (4) the minimum sample size may be reduced by one-third if the context of research allows for higher signifi cance level for test statistics. Interpretations based on less than 10 readings from a site should defi nitely be avoided.

Modeli za procjenu jednoosne tlačne čvrstoće i modula elastičnosti U ovom radu ukratko je izložen pregled najznačajnijih metoda za procjenu jednoosne tlačne čvrstoće i Yangovog modula elastičnosti intaktnog stijenskog materijala koje su nastale u okviru mnogobrojnih istraživanja. Iznesen je prijedlog podjele metoda prema kojemu se one u osnovi mogu podijeliti na jednostavne i složene metode. Jednostavne metode uključuju različite dijagrame i tablice te primjenu jednadžbi jednostruke regresije, a složene metode uključuju primjene jednadžbi višestruke regresije, modela neizrazite logike, neuronskih mreža, evolucijskog programiranja i regresijskog stabla. Models for estimating uniaxial compressive strength and elastic modulusThe most significant methods for estimating the uniaxial compressive strength and Young's modulus of intact rock material, formulated in the scope of numerous previous studies, are briefly presented in the paper. The proposal for classification of these methods, according to which they can generally be divided into simple and complex methods, is also presented. Simple methods include various diagrams and tables and the use of simple regression equations, while complex methods comprise the use of multiple regression equations, fuzzy logic models, neural networks, evolutionary programming, and regression trees.

In engineering and fundamental sciences, many important decisions are based on the results of quantitative measurements. When an observation result is stated, it is also required to determine the uncertainty associated with the observation. A measurement uncertainty analysis comprises of random and systematic components. Different from the random fluctuations, systematic uncertainties are resourced from the specifications, environmental conditions, calibration and other heuristic critical factors. This study assesses the systematic and random effects which create some uncertainty on a Schmidt Hammer (SH) rebound hardness test. In particular, as the certain probability terms, the systematic uncertainty component is focused and its volume has been appraised from a control framework. The importance of elemental uncertainty and coverage term are discussed from a statistical control perspective. In the same ground, the effective number of degrees of freedom is also evaluated. In this way, the importance of the fixed error sources has been appraised based on statistical control perspective. The use of an uncertainty term as a measurement parameter in testing-based decision making can provide some reliable and realistic information for engineering risk management and quality control.
