Fuzzy cognitive mapping: An old tool with new uses in nursing research

Abstract: Aims Describe the implementation and uses of fuzzy cognitive mapping (FCM) as a constructive method for meeting the unique and rapidly evolving needs of nursing inquiry and practice. Design Discussion paper. Data sources Drawing on published scholarship of cognitive mapping from the fields of ecological management, information technology, economics, organizational behaviour and health development, we consider how FCM can contribute to contemporary challenges and aspirations of nursing research. Implications fo… Show more

“…Each concept is a node linked with arrows (edges) to its outcomes or consequences. 20 Each relationship in the map receives a weight to indicate the strength of the influence that each node exerts on another. The cause-weighted arrow-outcome set summarises each causal statement, which together make up a complex knowledge network.…”

“…where a higher value for d represents greater differences between knowledge groups (Andersson & Silver, 2019). Consensus was greater between family physicians and birth companions ( d = 0:31) and lower between published literature and the birth companions ( d = 0:45): Published literature was updated with prior weighting densities from family physician perspectives, and separately from birth companion perspectives for each nonzero cell in the adjacency matrices (Bernardo & Smith, 2000;Joseph, 2000b).…”

“…In the final map, IS scaled the cumulative influences dividing them by the maximum cumulative influence in the map to obtain values between 0 and 1. 32 PA, EA and BO transcribed and translated the focus groups, the notes from the deliberative dialogues and the MSC narratives to English. LB used an inductive approach to design the coding structure; she and LR-R coded the data manually and drafted narrative reports from the three data collection methods.…”
