Fuzzy Determination of Target Shifting Time and Torque Control of Shifting Phase for Dry Dual Clutch Transmission

Abstract: Based on the independently developed five-speed dry dual clutch transmission (DDCT), the paper proposes the torque coordinating control strategy between engine and two clutches, which obtains engine speed and clutch transferred torque in the shifting process, adequately reflecting the driver intention and improving the shifting quality. Five-degree-of-freedom (DOF) shifting dynamics model of DDCT with single intermediate shaft is firstly established according to its physical characteristics. Then the quantitat… Show more

“…The transmission purposes to deliver the maximum engine torque through the clutch pack. The performance of the clutch depends on the transmission of the engine torque to the driven end [ 52 , 53 ]. Therefore, the optimal moment of inertia was 2 kg·m 2 because the maximum transmitted torque was 502.90 Nm at the driven end within the designed engagement time, whereas the engine’s maximum torque was 560 Nm.…”

“…Then, based upon the extremum value theorem, the clutch dynamic optimal engagement curves can be obtained in a number of typical working conditions. [18][19][20][21][22] However, this method cannot reflect drivers' intentions; 23 therefore, fuzzy control was introduced by Zhao et al 24 With a fuzzy-time decision and the model-based torque-coordinating control strategy, the shift quality is improved significantly. Furthermore, various driver's intentions can be reflected, with a strong robustness.…”

“…Figure 1 shows a two-dimensional structural diagram of an 8-speed automatic transmission with five shift elements, namely, a brake 1 and four clutches 1-4, which are engaged or separated by the electrohydraulic control system of transmissions. To shift from one gear to another in an automatic transmission, one clutch must be released and another must be applied synchronously, which is called a clutch-to-clutch shift [1,2]. With the development of six-speed transmissions or even more speeds nowadays, considerable time and effort has been made to study the clutch-to-clutch shift control technology [1,3,4].…”
