Fuzzy logic–based intelligent control for hydrostatic journal bearing

Abstract: Most of the researchers are focusing to bring automation in mechanical systems. So, current research work presents a mechatronic system called active hydrostatic journal bearing that is a higher demand of fast-growing industrial needs. The objective is to improve the dynamics and static characteristics of hydrostatic journal bearing. To achieve the objective, a feedback servo controlled system is presented. A mathematical model is proposed for newly proposed active hydrostatic journal bearing with servo contro… Show more

“…However, the three aforementioned strategies involve complex mechanisms for the bearing or lubricant feeding system. Rehaman et al [147] proposed a fuzzy control method and tested it under different dynamic conditions of pressure, speed, viscosity, and working load (figure 24(b)). Under active control by the fuzzy method, hydrostatic bearings simultaneously achieved higher stiffness, response, stability, and controllability than traditional hydrostatic bearings.…”

“…Especially when providing ancillary services to the grid, frequent start-stops are prominent. For these types of applications, recent research proposes active hydrostatic bearings, otherwise called hybrid bearings [24], [25]. a hydrostatic bearing, the lubricant pressure is not provided by the shaft rotational speed, but by external pumps.…”

“…The eddy current sensors are used to monitor the gap of the hydrostatic bearing so that the load-carrying capacity can be improved by activating the hydrostatic support but there is deficiency in the low resolution of the eddy current sensors [12]. A servo control feedback system is introduced to monitor the fluid film gap and advance control techniques are proposed to improve the dynamic characteristics [13,14], but the deficiency is the lack of experimental validation. Magnetic fluid is used as an active lubricant input to control the fluid film thickness for achieving the high load-carrying capacity, but the drawback is that it only works with magnetic fluids [15].…”
