Level-Crossing Investigation of the Stark-Splitting of the Lowest 1P1-Levels of Ca, Sr, and BaUsing the level-crossing technique, magnitude and sign of the tensor polarizability etch of the lowest 1Pl-levels of Ca, Sr, and Ba have been measured by investigating the splitting into Zeeman-sublevels in superimposed homogeneous electric and magnetic fields. The experimental results are: 0~ten/gj ~---13.6(3) kHz/(kV/cm) 2 for Ca etch/g j= --14.32 (15) The polarizability constants are discussed with regard to the state vectors of the lowest sp aP 1-and 3Pl-levels. The tensor polarizability of the 6s 6p 1Pl-level of Ba I is considered in relation to oscillator strengths of electric dipole transitions to neighbouring levels.
