Gallium-labelled peptides for imaging of inflammation

Abstract: Inflammation plays a major role in the development of many diseases. This review article summarizes recent research in the field of in vivo imaging of inflammation. Novel methodologies using PET with (68)Ga peptides targeting, for example, vascular adhesion protein 1 are discussed.

“…Adapted from Figure 6 (A 68 Ga-citrate PET/CT scan of a patient affected by acute osteomyelitis of the left distal tibia. The scan demonstrates an area of increased tracer uptake (red area), corresponding to an area of decreased bone density on the CT images, which is consistent with acute inflammation) by Roivainen et al16 with kind permission from Springer Science and Business Media.…”

“…Other peripheral inflammation probes, such as 68 Ga peptides targeting vascular adhesion protein 1, are being developed (Figure 1c). 16 The use of 68 Ga is especially interesting as the nuclide emits positrons in high yields, it is readily chelated, and it is available as a generator product rather than from a cyclotron.…”

“…Après la déception de traceurs, comme la ciprofloxacine marquée [50], de nouveaux traceurs sont aujourd'hui à l'étude avec des cibles plus spécifiques comme la « Vascular Adhesion Protein 1 » (VAP-1) marqués au gallium 68 [51].…”

“…68 Ga-citrate, the positron-emitting isotope, has characteristics similar to 67 Ga-citrate for imaging infection, with the added advantages inherent to PET imaging, including improved spatial resolution and the ability to quantify uptake (25). Several 68 Ga-labeled peptides are being evaluated for imaging inflammation in preclinical models that have recently been reviewed (26).…”
