Gamma-ray spectrometry with thick mercuric iodide detectors

Abstract: Gamma-ray s p e c t r a with energies up t o 1 . 3 MeV have been d e t e c t e d f o r t h e first time with l-cm-thick HgI2 semiconductor d e t e c t o r s a t room temperature.The s p e c t r a can be taken using a 10 u s , o r a llshort,l' 0.5 u s , charge c o l l e c t i o n time. The l a t t e r has produced b e t t e r r e s u l t s with b e t t e r peak e f f i c i e n c y , higher peak-to-valley r a t i o , and fewer low energy counts with l i t t l e s a c r i f i c e i n r e s o l u t i o n .
