Gaseous pollutants over different sites in a metropolitan region (Pune) over India

Abstract: The various gaseous pollutants (ozone, nitrogen oxides, carbon monoxide and Volatile Organic Compounds) were measured at 9 different micro-environments (i.e. Urban area, semi urban area, industrial area, residential area, agricultural area, etc.) over Pune city in the year 2017 (January-December). The urban area had the highest concentration of ozone (during Mar to May), attributed mainly due to the high concentration of the precursor gases like nitrogen oxide (NO x) and carbon monoxide (CO). The diurnal patte… Show more

“…The averaged value of all these stations for a particular city has been used in this work. The US-EPA approved online analysers are used to monitor O 3 , CO, NO x (NO+NO 2 ), and VOC concentrations continuously, every 5 min (Anand et al 2020 ). The ground-level ozone was measured by the ozone analyser O342 (Environment SA, France) through the UV light absorption method, in which the amount of UV light absorbed is proportional to the amount of ozone present in the air, with a measurement range of 0–10 ppm and accuracy of < ± 2%.…”

“…The lower detection limit of the species is about 0.4–0.5 ppbv. Additional details of working methods are reported elsewhere ( Beig et al, 2013 ; Anand et al, 2020 ; Yadav et al, 2014 ). The meteorological parameters were at the same time measured using Automatic Weather Station co-located alongside air quality monitoring stations whose details are provided elsewhere ( Anand et al, 2019 ) and hence not discussed here in detail.…”

“…According to the National Ambient Air Quality Standards set by Central Pollution Control Board of India, the standard for ozone concentrations averaged over 8 hour exposure period is 100 µg m -3 or ~51 ppb (CPCB, 2009). In a recent study, Anand et al (2020) have reported that during 2017, the 8 hour average (10:00-18:00 hours) ozone mixing ratios in some parts of Pune reached over 70 ppb, with peaks of ~92 ppb. These values are much higher than the national air quality standards and show the need to reduce ozone in Pune.…”

“…In this manuscript, simultaneous observations of NO2 and HCHO are being reported in Pune city for the first time, which aims at a better understanding of tropospheric chemistry (including ozone formation) in Pune city. A recent study (Anand et al, 2020) has shown that the average ozone concentration over Pune is higher than the National Ambient Air Quality Standards for ozone (CPCB, 2009). Hence, here we study in detail the ratio HCHO and NO2 to identify controlling factor for tropospheric ozone formation in Pune city.…”
