Gastric and extragastric leiomyoblastomas.Clinicopathologic study of 44 cases

Abstract: Forty‐four cases of leiomyoblastomas are presented and their clinicopathologic characteristics discussed. Most of the tumors were located in the stomach (26 cases). Biologic behavior correlated with the duration of symptoms, anatomic location, and the size of the tumor. Prognosis cannot be predicted with certainty on the basis of histologic characteristics. Thirty‐eight per cent of the gastric and 55% of the extragastric tumors proved fatal. Treatment of choice depends on location and extent of disease but, in… Show more

“…Only these other two cases of vaginal epithelioid leiomyoma have been reported in the English literature. Epithelioid leiomyoma is more commonly observed in the stomach (59–94% [3–5]), in other gastrointestinal tract regions, the mesentery, and the uterus [3, 4]. However, few cases have been reported for the gynecological organ, 16 cases in the vulva [6], and two cases in the vagina [2].…”

“…Stout 21 and Lavin et al 22 described the importance of the mitotic rate as an index for the degree of malignancy of this condition. In the present study, many patients with liver metastasis showed marked mitosis, but mitosis is sometimes not observed at all, 5 indicating that prediction of the risk of metastasis based solely on mitosis is not possible.…”
