Gastric Duplication Cysts in Adults: A Report of Three Cases

Abstract: Gastric duplication cyst is a rare congenital anomaly of the gastrointestinal tract and is especially uncommon in adults. Most cases in adults are discovered incidentally on radiological examination or gastric endoscopy. Accurate diagnosis of these cysts before resection is difficult. Differential diagnoses are varied. Malignant transformation of a gastric duplication cyst is very rare. We present three cases of asymptomatic noncommunicating gastric duplication cysts in adults.

“…Other symptoms reported are epigastric discomfort or pain and persistent cough with hemoptysis [ 3 , 6 , 7 , 9 ]. Most cases in adults are asymptomatic and diagnosed incidentally [ 11 , 12 ]. In the present case, the FDC was an incidental finding, as the patient did not have any associated symptoms, and it was discovered as part of the presurgical diagnostic workup for his unrelated esophageal carcinoma.…”

“…Owing to the extremely variable presentation, the role of CT, endoscopic ultrasonography and magnetic resonance imaging is important in diagnosing GDCs and their complications . In this case, CT has been a suitable method for recognition of the lesion among other submucosal gastric cysts particularly gastrointestinal stromal tumours, and among cysts arising from the adjacent organs such as pancreatic pseudocyst, pancreatic mucinous cystadenoma, simple, neoplastic or hydatid cysts of the left hepatic lobe, biliary cysts, and splenic cysts . Cystectomy or partial gastrectomy using an open or a laparoscopic approach is often the preferred treatment for patients with GDCs.…”

“…Rarely encountered in adults, the majority of GDCs are incidental finding in clinical settings, and symptoms if present, are nonspecific complaints . Complications of duplication include infection, obstruction, haemorrhage, malignant changes into carcinoma, peptic ulcer, and fistula formation .…”

DiscussionGastric duplication cysts, rarely diagnosed in adults, and often discovered incidentally on imaging, were first reported in 1911 [1]. They are congenital abnormalities, and account for 2-4% of gastrointestinal tract duplication cysts [2].
