Gastric Emptying and Intragastric Distribution of a Solid Meal in Functional Dyspepsia

Abstract: Our study confirmed that prolonged gastric emptying in patients with functional dyspepsia is related to the female sex, while the abnormalities of the meal intragastric distribution appear to occur in dyspeptic males and females. Anxiety is frequent in functional dyspepsia and seems to be related to abnormal antral retention of food in these patients.

“…Since psychological stresses have been shown to affect gastrointestinal motility, it seems that the emotional factors, such as depression and anxiety, have also a negative effect on gastric motility. However, there is some evidence which suggests that there is an association between psychological abnormalities and impaired gastric motor function in patients with functional Dyspepsia [47]. In the present study, families with five to six members had the highest frequency of developing dyspepsia (35.7%), while families with three members were least developed Dyspepsia (17.9%).…”

“…Furthermore, psychosocial trait factors can negatively affect the clinical course 125 and shape treatment outcomes in functional dyspepsia 129,130 . Finally, different traits reportedly correlate with altered gastric sensorimotor functioning in functional dyspepsia, including gastric sensitivity, accommodation, antral meal retention and gastric emptying [131][132][133][134] .…”

“…Electrical shock significantly decreased the percentage in the 3-cpm frequency group and tachyarrhythmia (%) component of the EGG, but forehead cooling increased the percentage of the 3-cpm frequency group (Muth et al, 1999). Anxiety has also been reported to facilitate antral meal retention (Lorena et al, 2004). The epigastric 3-and 6-cpm groups electrical activity in the EGG were suggested to reflect those of the colon on the basis of the EGG results obtained after total gastrectomy (Pezzola et al, 1989;Homma et al, 1995Homma et al, , 1999.…”
