Gastrodia and Uncaria (tianma gouteng) water extract exerts antioxidative and antiapoptotic effects against cerebral ischemia in vitro and in vivo

Abstract: BackgroundGastrodia and Uncaria decoction (tianma gouteng yin) is commonly used in Chinese medicine to treat cerebral ischemia. The aim of this study was to investigate the neuroprotective effects of a water extract (GUW) of Gastrodia elata (tianma; GE) and Uncaria rhynchophylla (gouteng; UR) against ischemic insult using oxygen-glucose-deprived neuronal differentiated PC12 cells and rats subjected to middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAO).MethodsGUW was prepared by boiling raw GE and UR in water, followed by… Show more

“…Tianma‐Gouteng granule (TGG) is a well‐known traditional Chinese medicine described in the Chinese Pharmacopoeia (Chinese Pharmacopeia Commission, ). TGG is widely clinically used for the treatment of cardio‐cerebrovascular diseases in China, such as hypertension (Wang, Feng, Yang, & Liu, ), cerebral ischemia (Xian, Choi, Lau, & Leung, ), acute ischemic stroke (Shen et al, ) and Parkinson's disease (Liu, Song, Lu, & Huang, ). TGG consists of 11 herbal materials: Gastrodiae Rhizoma, Uncariae Ramulus Cum Uncis, Haliotidis Concha, Gardeniae Fructus, Scutellariae Radix, Achyranthis Bidentatae Radix, Eucommia Cortex, Leonuri Herba, Taxilli Herba, Polygoni Multiflori Caulis and Poria (ChinesePharmacopeiaCommission, ).…”

“… 15–17 The subsequent treatment, which introduced GR and UR, is indicated for neurodegenerative disease in China. 18–20 Aside from these core components, TCM physicians also added other adjuvant components to enhance the function of core components for this patient. Of note, two components, Hedyotis Diffusa (HD) and Scutellaria Baicalensis (SB), have demonstrated antitumour effects in various types of cancer, including colorectal cancer, 21 22 ovarian cancer, 23 24 pancreatic cancer 25 and lung cancer.…”

“…Increasing experimental and evidence-based medical evidence shows that TM compatible with other CHMs can be used to treat and prevent stroke and repeat stroke. TM and Uncaria rhynchophylla (Gouteng, GT) have been confirmed to modulate the antioxidant system and antiapoptotic genes in oxygen glucose-deprived neuronal differentiated PC12 cells and in middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAO) rats [10], benefiting the treatment of stroke or repeat stroke. erefore, for the development of new drugs, it is of great significance to identify more herbal pairs containing TM from formulae or clinical prescriptions that can effectively prevent ischemic stroke and to explain their mechanism of antistroke.…”
