Gastrointestinal stromal tumour in a recipient with kidney transplantation

Abstract: Immunosuppression is associated with an increased risk of post-transplant malignancies. Gastrointestinal stromal tumours are the most common mesenchymal tumours of the gastrointestinal tract. However, they have seldom been reported recipient with transplantation. In this report, a 46-year-old woman, a recipient with kidney transplantation, who developed a gastric tumour is presented. Removal of this tumour required a partial gastrectomy. Histopathology and immunohistochemistry examinations revealed a high-risk… Show more

“…Immunocompromised status increases the risk of many complications including various infections, metabolic diseases, and even malignancy. Though it is uncertain if the risk of GIST occurrence is also associated, the incidence of this neoplasm in patients on immunosuppressive therapy, such as cyclosporine, azathioprine, prednisone or tacrolimus post-kidney or liver transplant is seldom reported [ 17 , 18 ]. On the same line of thought, the immunosuppressed status on the risk of metastatic behavior of GIST in these patients remained unanswered.…”

“…Gastrointestinal adenocarcinoma, post‐transplant lymphoproliferative disease and cytomegalovirus‐associated pseudotumours are the most common aetiologies. Gastrointestinal stromal disease and malakoplakia have been reported in kidney transplant recipients 2,3 . Viral infections with herpes simplex virus, human herpes virus‐8 and human papilloma virus; bacterial infections with Yersinia enterocolitica , Actinomyces and Mycobacterium tuberculosis ; and fungal infections with mucormycosis are potential infectious causatives for gastrointestinal masses post‐transplantation 4…”

“…Congenital hernias are more frequently diagnosed during infancy, whereas acquired hernias usually develop after thoraco-abdominal trauma and may have early or delayed presetation. 1,2 Diaphragmatic hernias may become clinically evident either with respiratory distress or gastrointestinal complications. 3 Here, we report the case of a 55-year-old woman presented to the emergency department complaining a 4-day history of epigastric pain associated with nausea and vomiting that had worsened over the last 3 h.…”

“…However, this approach is not feasible for a number of patient groups, namely the elderly with their multiple comorbidities and high frailty scores [6]. Invasive interventions can lead to high procedure-related complications and poor outcomes in this group [7,8]. On the other hand, an endoscopic evaluation for young and healthy patients may have a low yield for delineation of gastrointestinal wall thickening detected in CT.…”
