Gastroprotective effect of alpha-pinene and its correlation with antiulcerogenic activity of essential oils obtained from Hyptis species

Abstract: Background:Alpha-pinene (α-pinene) is a monoterpene commonly found in essential oils with gastroprotective activity obtained from diverse medicinal plants, including Hyptis species. The genus Hyptis (lamiaceae) consists of almost 400 species widespread in tropical and temperate regions of America. In the north and northeastern Brazil, some Hyptis species are used in traditional medicine to treat gastrointestinal disturbances. Objective:The present study has investigated the gastoprotective effect of purified α-… Show more

“…LIM could neutralize stomach acid and enhance peristaltic movements, and was indicated for the treatment of heartburn and gastro-intestinal reflux disorder ( Wilkins, 2002 ; Moraes et al, 2009 ; Patrick, 2011 ). Meanwhile, α-PIN exhibits a significant inhibition of gastric mucosal lesions induced by ethanol, which might be associated, at least in part, with an increase of mucus secretion and reduction of gastric hydrogen ion secretion ( Pinheiro Mde et al, 2015 ). Long term usage of NSAID such as naproxen could cause gastric ulcer.…”

“…Acetic acid causes the release of endogenous mediators such as PGE2 and PGF2α, histamine, bradykinin, and serotonin and stimulates the nerve endings directly by pH reduction (1). Therefore, the effectiveness of EOPPgfl in decreasing acetic acid-induced contortions, although suggesting an involvement of primarily neural mechanisms, does not exclude a antinociceptive effect of EOPPgfl due to anti-inflammatory activity, secondary to inhibitory action on the phlogistic activity of autacoids such as histamine, serotonin, and/or prostaglandin.…”
