GC-MS Analysis of Methanol and Ethyl Acetate Extract of fruits of Sphaeranthus indicus

Abstract: Introduction: To identify the various phytoconstituents present in the plant Sphaeranthus indicus by using gas chromatography and mass spectrometry. Methods: The fruits of Sphaeranthus indicus were extracted with Different solvents of increasing polarity. The methanol and ethylacetate extract were subjected to GCMS analysis to detect the phytoconstituents. Results: Totally 26 compounds were identified. Among these 13 constituents in methanol extract and 13 constituents in ethylacetate extract were identified … Show more

“…Similar study by Shreedhara et al [29] exhibited the lipid peroxidation inhibition activity of Argyreia nervosa chloroform extract. The analysis of the phytoconstituents in the extracts was analyzed by GC-MS method [30] . The potential active compounds responsible for antioxidant activity in A. imbricata leaves extracts was identified using GC-MS analysis.…”

“…Seaweeds are potential sources of novel bioactive compounds which might bring new insights to industries such as pharmacology, animal feed, cosmetics, and others 9 . This study allowed to identify 82 phytocompounds from methanolic extract of eight seaweeds species (Table 1), by applying GC-MS, a high sensitive equipment which allow to identify volatile molecules from the samples 28 ; being also the most precise methods to identify various phytocompounds in extracts from different species 29 . From the extracts analysed in this study, J. adhaerens and P. devriesii are the species with more phytocompounds identified, 36 and 33, respectively, these findings might indicate that these species are rich in the phytocompounds.…”

“…GC-MS is highly sensitive equipment and one of the most precise in identifying various compounds in extracts from different solvents 27 . In this study, GC-MS enabled the identification of 42 phytocompounds from the methanolic extracts of the red seaweed L. divaricata, 32 phytocompounds (Table 1) and T. flabellatus, 17 phytocompounds (Table 2).…”
