GC-MS analysis of young and mature wild agarwood leaves (Aquilaria malaccensis Lamk) and its antioxidant potential

Abstract: Agarwood grows wildly in the nature and its leaves may be utilized as raw materials for agarwood tea, especially from Aquilaria species. The study was conducted to determine the chemical compounds in the young and mature leaves of wild gaharu (Aquilaria malaccensis Lamk). Chemical compounds were detected using pyrolysis gas chromatography mass spectrometry (py-GCMS) while antioxidant capacity of the leaf extracts was assayed using 2,2-diphenyl-1-picryl-hydrazyl-hydrate (DPPH) free radical method. The results o… Show more

“…The cost, labour, time and environmental impact of these sample preparation methods is significant, with SFE being more environmentally friendly (Hamed et al, 2023). Batubara et al (2021) developed a serial maceration method to isolate quercetin from ethanol and methanol. Gas chromatography with mass spectrometry (GC-MS) and liquid chromatography with tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) are used for qualitative and quantitative studies of plant compounds (Kleinenkuhnen et al, 2019;Batubara et al, 2021).…”

“…Aquilaria malaccensis is a potential pharmacological plant due to its capacity to generate various secondary metabolites. Aquilaria malaccensis leaves extract has antioxidant (Hendra et al, 2016;Halim et al, 2022), antiviral against dengue virus (Masita et al, 2020) and immunomodulatory potential (Batubara et al, 2021;Wahid et al, 2022;Yana et al, 2022). Furthermore, the stem has been referenced for anticancer activities (Hegde et al, 2018).…”
