GC-MS Chemical Profiling, Biological Investigation of Three Salvia Species Growing in Uzbekistan

Abstract: Salvia is a potentially valuable aromatic herb that has been used since ancient times. The present work studied the chemical profile of three Salvia species essential oils (EO): S. officinalis, S. virgata and S. sclarea, as well as assessing their antioxidant and enzyme inhibitory activities. A total of 144 compounds were detected by GC-MS analysis, representing 91.1, 84.7 and 78.1% in S. officinalis, S. virgata and S. sclarea EOs, respectively. The major constituents were cis-thujone, 2,4-hexadienal and 9-oct… Show more

“…In another study, the α-glucosidase inhibitory activity of S. spinosa EO was evaluated, which demonstrated moderate inhibitory activity with an IC 50 value of 43.79 µg/mL, compared with acarbose (IC 50 = 17.1 µg/mL) [ 49 ]. On the contrary, another study indicated that neither S. virgata nor S. sclarea EOs were active toward α-glucosidase [ 7 ].…”

“…The obtained information from LC-MS was subjected to chemometric analysis. Principal Component Analysis (PCA) was first utilized as a primary step for interpretation of the data to portray an outline for all species discrepancies and to identify markers accountable for this difference. , Hierarchal cluster analysis (HCA) was then employed to allow clustering of different species. The clustering pattern was constructed by a single linkage method.…”

“…The data obtained from GC-MS were subjected to multivariate analysis. Principal component analysis (PCA) was performed as the first step in data analysis to provide an overview of all observations and samples and to identify and evaluate groupings, trends, and strong outliers [ 73 ]. Hierarchal cluster analysis (HCA) was used to allow the clustering of samples.…”
