GC/MS Determination of Phenolic Compounds in Soil Samples Using Soxhlet Extraction and Derivatization Techniques

Abstract: Scientists are certain that a number of synthetic chemicals act like hormones (e.g. estrogen) and interact with the human hormone system. Scientists also agree that the magnitude of the problem (including human exposure) is uncertain. Therefore, the analysis of phenols in natural wastewater and soils is of prime importance to environmental organizations due to their frequent occurrence in a wide range of industrial waste and natural water. They are toxic and have an effect upon aquatic organism including bioac… Show more

“…There are many different analytical methods for the determination of BPA and 4-NP in aquatic environment, plastics and soil, including GC-MS, LC-MS and HPLC-FLD [7][8][9][10][11]. However, only a few analytical methods for the determination of BPA or 4-NP in biological samples were reported.…”

“…Procedures described in the methods of APHA (1998) were used in the preparation of water samples while the metal concentrations were determined by Atomic Absorption spectrophotometry (buck scientific 200A model). Gas chromatography mass-spectrophotomery (GC-MS) was used in the hydrocarbon analysis (Law and Biscaya, 1994;Helaleh et al, 2001).…”

“…When sludge containing APEOs is to be analysed, four main extraction techniques are available: Soxhlet extraction [23,24], ultrasonically assisted extraction [25,26], microwave-assisted extraction (MAE) [27,28] and pressurized fluid extraction (PFE) [14,15]. Pressurized fluid extraction is also known as pressurized liquid extraction or accelerated solvent extraction and is the main extraction technique for APEOs in solid matrices [4].…”
