GC-MS vs. GC-MS-MS analysis of pentacyclic terpanes in crude oils from Libya and Serbia - a comparison of two methods

Abstract: meters from the line of equality was similar for the oils from the same oil field but some differences were observed for the oils from different oil fields. Therefore, when GC-MS-MS results are to be used in organic geochemical interpretations, a regional calibration of GC-MS vs. GC-MS-MS relationship for each petroleum system is highly recommended.

“…Organic geochemical methods were applied in 2 oil samples that originated from the Samah field Figure 3. API gravity is a measure of oil density at 21C o using 50 mL glass bottles (pycnometers) and is related to this equation: API o =141,5/specific gravity (d)-131,5 11,18,34 The asphaltene was separated from the crude oils by adding n-pentane to beaker until mass ratio of n-heptane to crude oil 40:1. Solution was placed in a dark place at 21°C.…”

“…This study required a large number of biomarker parameters from the saturated hydrocarbon fraction and naphtalene, phenanthrene and dibenzothiophene maturation parameters from the aromatic fraction to be determined. 8,9 In our present paper, an attempt was made to estimate the type of the precursor biomass, deposition environment, degree of maturation and intensity of changes in reservoir rocks of the crude oils from the Basins Murzuq and Sirte in Libya. This kind of research is particularly significant in oil-source rock and oiloil correlation studies because similarities in these characteristics are considered as clear and convincing evidence of geochemical and genetic correlation of the investigated samples.…”
