Aim: The objective of this study is to determine the applications of nurses for port catheter care. Material and Method: The research was conducted as a descriptive study. The study sample consisted of 196 nurses who worked in an Education and Research Hospital and agreed to participate in the study. In this study, data were collected using a data collection form created by researchers. Statistical data were expressed as mean±standard deviation (X±SS) and percentage (%). Results: According to the results of this study, 90.8% of nurses were women, 65.8% were married, 69.4% had a bachelor’s degree, and the average age was 38.08±8.76. 77.04% of nurses (n=151) are concerned about using a port catheter as a venous access point in a patient with a port catheter. 15.81% of the nurses (n=31) stated that they use port catheter right after controlling its location through radiography, 17.34% of the nurses (n=34) stated that pulling back blood on the syringe to confirm the location of the port catheter by observing the fluid flow, 20.4% of the nurses (n=40) state that they used a specific catheter needle to intervene the port catheter, 39.28% of the nurses (n=77) stated that they flushed the port catheter with saline and heparin saline to avoid clogging of the catheter. They flushed the catheter port once in 1-2 months with heparin saline when the catheter port cannot be used for a long time. 21.93% (n=43) of nurses stated that they dressed the area with antiseptic solution before application to prevent port catheter infection, and 17.34% (n=34) of them stated that they checked the location of the catheter by withdrawing blood before application to prevent extravasation. Conclusion: The applications used by the nurses for port catheter care are compatible with the literature; however, these are limited.

Evaluation of the Relationship between Knowledge Level and Anxiety Level of Cancer Patients with Port Catheter

Introduction: Complications related to port catheterization can be prevented or reduced in patients who are informed about port catheterization, and they can also experience less anxiety and fear. Aim: This study was conducted to evaluate the relationship between the level of knowledge about port catheterization and the level of anxiety in cancer patients with port catheters, and to determine the factors affecting it. Method: The sample of this descriptive and correlation study consisted of 136 patients receiving chemotherapy. The data was collected by the Patient Information Survey, Port Catheterization Patient Information Survey, and the Beck Anxiety Inventory. Results: Of the patients, 15.4% received training before port catheterization and the physician gave 9.6% of the training. The total mean scores of both scales were determined 20.12 ± 2.44 for the Port Catheterization Patient Information Survey and 8.17 ± 4.85 for the Beck Anxiety Inventory. In the study, the married patients’ port catheterization knowledge mean score was found to be statistically higher than that of the single patients, and the difference was significant (p < 0.05). In addition, this study found no significant relationship between port catheterization knowledge and anxiety scores (r = 0.13; p > 0.05). Conclusion: The patients' knowledge level about port catheterization was above average and their anxiety level was mild. The level of knowledge of the patients about port catheterization did not affect their anxiety levels. Nurses need to consider individual characteristics and disease-related variables in the education of patients with port catheters

Surface modification strategies for hemodialysis catheters to prevent catheter‐related infections: A review

Insertion of a central venous catheter is one of the most common invasive procedures applied in hemodialysis therapy for end‐stage renal disease. The most important complication of a central venous catheter is catheter‐related infections that increase hospitalization and duration of intensive care unit stay, cost of treatment, mortality, and morbidity rates. Pathogenic microorganisms, such as, bacteria and fungi, enter the body from the catheter insertion site and the surface of the catheter can become colonized. The exopolysaccharide‐based biofilms from bacterial colonies on the surface are the main challenge in the treatment of infections. Catheter lock solutions and systemic antibiotic treatment, which are commonly used in the treatment of hemodialysis catheter‐related infections, are insufficient to prevent and terminate the infections and eventually the catheter needs to be replaced. The inadequacy of these approaches in termination and prevention of infection revealed the necessity of coating of hemodialysis catheters with bactericidal and/or antiadhesive agents. Silver compounds and nanoparticles, anticoagulants (e.g., heparin), antibiotics (e.g., gentamicin and chlorhexidine) are some of the agents used for this purpose. The effectiveness of few commercial hemodialysis catheters that were coated with antibacterial agents has been tested in clinical trials against catheter‐related infections of pathogenic bacteria, such as Staphylococcus aureus and Staphylococcus epidermidis with promising results. Novel biomedical materials and engineering techniques, such as, surface micro/nano patterning and the conjugation of antimicrobial peptides, enzymes, metallic cations, and hydrophilic polymers (e.g., poly [ethylene glycol]) on the surface, has been suggested recently.
