Gender Differences in Psycho-Social-Spiritual Healing

Abstract: Background: Many individuals exhibit significant distress in response to serious and/or life-limiting illness. However, there are others who make life-transforming changes, which involve healing experiences in the psychological, social, and spiritual domains of life regardless of illness outcome. “…Spirituality has been found to relieve stresses associated with physical and psychosocial adversities of later life. Similarly, our finding that women reported higher level of spirituality than men replicates the results of a number of other studies (Krentzman, 2017;Luna et al, 2019), although a few investigations did not find significant sex differences in this regard (Simpson et al, 2008). The observed sex differences in spirituality have been ascribed to biological, psychological, sociological, and developmental factors (Hood et al, 2009).…”

“…This finding is consistent with previous research suggesting that women may be more open to development in gratitude and compassion, while men may have a stronger disease- or health-related focus. 58 Further, the patient assessment only contained two measurement times, as long-term assessment plans were proven to be unfeasible considering an average hospital stay of less than 2 weeks. 31 , 60 The present attrition rate of 22.1% is comparable to other studies and we addressed the issue of missing data integrating findings from different statistical approaches.…”

“…Some studies suggest gender related differences in images of God or in the ways of applying religious coping strategies and in the use of positive and negative religious coping ( 154 156 ). Another study revealed while men and women suffering from serious or life-limited illness endorsed an overall similar level psycho-social-spiritual healing, women were shown to have greater enjoyment of mind-body practices, including prayers, gratitude, compassion and a desire to be more positive than men ( 157 ). Evidence they may experience introspective and reflective processes of healing in a different way may have some practical implications in choosing specific therapeutic interventions.…”
