Gender Differences in Self-Perceived Personal Resources of Older Adults with Generalized Anxiety Symptoms

Abstract: Background: Symptoms of general anxiety disorder (GAD) are common in older age, especially in women. Gender and sex differences in anxiety influence the way individuals interact with others and how they cope with new circumstances. Psychosocial resources (personal traits, social contacts, etc.) play an important role in the process of dealing with subjective worries and difficult situations. The aim of this study is to examine gender differences of selfperceived personal resources in elderly patients.

“…First of all, loneliness in older women is more frequent and often more severe [ 17 ]. Older women were shown to feel lonely more frequently in comparison with men, even if there is no difference in the quantity or quality of their social network [ 19 ]. Thus, it can be hypothesized that women are more sensitive regarding feelings of loneliness or social dissonance.…”

“…Prevalence of loneliness was higher in older women in comparison with men, but particularly high in older persons who are living alone [ 17 ]. Additional variables that have shown to be associated with loneliness are as follows: older age, poor health, and low income; however, psychological factors such as low self-efficacy beliefs, negative life events, and a low level of personal resources are also determinants [ 18 , 19 ]. A recent review describes social connectedness – as a possible opposite of loneliness—as a key element to health and well-being [ 20 ].…”

“…GAD was predicted by affective symptoms of depression and loneliness in women and somatic symptoms in men. An earlier study focusing on the ESTHER cohort of older adults with GAD showed a higher prevalence of somatisation in women as compared to men [37]. The authors hypothesize that the increased anxiety associated with physical symptoms in men may be reflective of reduced vitality.…”
