Immune thrombocytopenia (ITP) is an autoimmune disease, in which autoantibodies attack the platelets and megakaryocytes. 1 This leads to thrombocytopenia and sometimes also platelet function defects. 2,3 The most common clinical features include petechiae, bruises, epistaxis, and gum bleeds. 4 A less frequently mentioned, but possibly very relevant symptom is heavy menstrual bleeding (HMB), as ITP often affects women of reproductive age. 1 HMB is defined as menstrual periods with abnormally heavy bleeding and/or prolonged bleeding (more than 7 days). 5,6 HMB poses a monthly challenge for women and often affects their quality of life.
