General and specific combining ability in sweet sorghum

Abstract: In breeding of sweet sorghum hybrids, non-additive genetic effects are important in phenotypic expression of the traits of interest. The aim of this study was to evaluate the general combining ability (GCA) of sweet sorghum lines and the specific combining ability (SCA) of the hybrids for agronomic and technological traits. Five fertility restorer lines, four male-sterile lines, and their hybrids from partial diallel crosses were evaluated in experiments laid out in a 5 x 6 triple rectangular lattice design in… Show more

“…The GCA and SCA effects and their interaction with location was also significant depicting different reactions by different genotypes to the environmental influences. This indicates possible deviations in performances of varieties/hybrids in different environments.Previous studies in different crops (Nass et al, 2000;Golkar et al, 2017;Murtadha et al, 2018;da Rocha et al, 2018;Ferriera et al, 2018;Moura et al, 2018;Yu et al, 2020) also reported significant interaction of environment with GCA and SCA indicating varying estimates of GCA and SCA in different environments. Significant interaction of GCA and SCA with environment suggests selecting different parental lines for hybrids for specific environments.…”

“…Diallel mating designs are often used when a series of lines are part of a breeding program and superior combinations have to be identified (Hallauer et al 2010, Rocha et al 2018). This methodology is already being applied to several species (Bignotto et al 2015, Barata et al 2019) and has been described for tobacco in temperate climate.…”

“…At the same time, this plant has a high photosynthetic efficiency and can form a powerful biomass in a short time. Due to its biological characteristics, it is an alternative source of biofuels and sugar-containing products based on the processing of sugar sorghum stems [3][4][5]. Therefore, the creation of new highly productive varieties and hybrids of sorghum intended for use as an alternative raw material in the production of bioethanol is a promising direction in breeding.…”
