Generation of Reactive Oxygen Metabolites by the Varicose Vein Wall

Abstract: varicose veins, especially those complicated with superficial thrombophlebitis revealed increased free radical generation. Its sources might be neutrophils, and in vv complicated with superficial thrombophlebitis-xanthine oxidase.

“…In the present study on VV and not its sequelae, complications or adverse manifestations, there has been a rise of these markers in numerous cases of VV. 1 According to Condezo-Hoyos et al, who compared the levels of MDA in patients with CVI versus Normal Individuals, and found marked levels of MDA in patients with CVI.…”

“…1 Later, two studies were performed by research groups with preliminary aim of establishing the role of oxidative stress in VV. The first study was conducted by Condezo-Hoyos et al were blood samples were obtained from patients of CVI of CEAP C2 stage patients versus healthy controls revealing a significant increase in MDA in the CVI patients.…”

“…Mitochondria are the main source of cell energy and are involved in the generation of reactive oxygen species in vascular SMC and other cell types [34]. The decrease in oxygen impairs energy production and generation of reactive oxygen metabolites by these organelles in varicose veins [35]. CVI is known to be associated with ischemic conditions [36].…”

“…[2][3][4][5][6] Regardless of these factors, this is manifested by venous and valvular dilation. [2][3][4]7,8] Some epidemiological studies suggest that this may be the result of abnormalities in the enzymes involved in the functioning of homocysteine metabolism. [9] The recurrence of varicose veins gives rise to significant expenses and a burden on public health, hence, the need for further studies in this area.…”
