Genetic amniocentesis: 505 cases performed before the sixteenth week of gestation

Abstract: Between May 1987 and November 1988, 505 early amniocentesis within the 15th week of gestation were performed at the First Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, 'L. Mangiagalli' of the University of Milan and at the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology of 'Gaslini' hospital in Genoa. A total number of ten abnormal fetal karyotypes were diagnosed. In addition, one case of pseudomosaicism (not confirmed on fetal blood) and one case of osteogenesis imperfecta type II (observed at ultrasound examination) we… Show more

“…Moreover, our results do not apparently differ from those of the trials comparing CVS with midtrimester amniocentesis (Canadian Collaborative CVS-Amniocentesis Clinical Trial Group, 1989;Rhoads et al, 1989;Smidt-Jensen et al, 1992;Ammala et al, 1993). CVS procedure-related risks remained low in the population sampled at 13-14 and 15 or more gestational weeks; the total fetal loss rate values compare favourably to traditional mid-trimester (0·47 per cent vs. 1·0-1·57 per cent) (Rhoads et al, 1989;Smidt-Jensen et al, 1992; MRC Working Party on the Evaluation of Chorionic Villus Sampling, 1991) or early (13-14 weeks) amniocentesis (0·85 per cent vs. 1·37-2·74 per cent) (Elejalde et al, 1990;Hanson et al, 1990;Nevin et al, 1990;Penso et al, 1990;Stripparo et al, 1990;Elias and Simpson, 1993;Crandall et al, 1994). The number of sampling device insertions, one or two, did not influence the pregnancy outcome either in the transabdominal (3·2 per cent vs. 3·2 per cent) or in the transcervical (4·6 per cent vs. 5·29 per cent) cases.…”
