Genetic and morphological characterisation of the Ankole Longhorn cattle in the African Great Lakes region

Abstract: -The study investigated the population structure, diversity and differentiation of almost all of the ecotypes representing the African Ankole Longhorn cattle breed on the basis of morphometric (shape and size), genotypic and spatial distance data. Twentyone morphometric measurements were used to describe the morphology of 439 individuals from 11 sub-populations located in five countries around the Great Lakes region of central and eastern Africa. Additionally, 472 individuals were genotyped using 15 DNA micros… Show more

“…This may be related to varying sensitivity of the two distance estimates, although both methods were able to separate the southern WAD goats from their northern counterparts. A similar finding was reported in Ankole cattle [49] where the results of morphological analyses were not in concordance with the molecular genetic relationship results. The authors attributed this to the fact that microsatellites loci are selectively neutral whereas morphological traits are under selection.…”

“…These include horn shape and size (e.g. Ankole and Kuri) (Rege et al, 2006; Ndumu et al, 2008 ; Kugonza et al, 2011 ; Terefe et al, 2015 ). In addition to physical features, non-visible traits such as disease resistance, climatic stress resistance and productivity traits also differ among breeds.…”
