Genetic characterization of fin fish species from the Warri River at Ubeji, Niger Delta, Nigeria

Abstract: A study to evaluate the genetic similarities and differences among 11 specimens of cichlids and four specimens of mudcatfishes obtained from Warri River was carried out through DNA fingerprinting analysis using random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD)-PCR amplification with seven decamer primers and dendrograms through unweighted pair-group method with average (UPGMA) cluster analysis. The total number of bands generated by the seven RAPD primers, ranged between 2 to 33 for the cichlids and 8 to 28 for the catf… Show more

“…The total sum of the PAHs in the fish sample was 0.300µ g/kg. Comparing the result of this study with a research study conducted by Asagbra, et al, (2015) to determine the concentration of PAHs in fish samples from Warri River at Ubeji, Niger Delta, Nigeria recorded a total concentration between 0-1098.5ng/g from the fish sample. Tongo et al, (2018) investigated the concentration of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in Mullet fish (Mugil cephalus) samples from fishing areas in Amariaria Community, downstream of Bonny River, Southern Nigeria.…”

“…As a persistent organic pollutants (POPs), much research has focused on characterizing their concentrations and health effects during the past decade using various environmental risk assessments (Laigi et al, 2020;Gao et al, 2018;Li et al, 2015;Wang et al, 2013;Yu et al, 2015;Lau et al, 2010). Various samples analysed varied from water, soil, sediment and fish samples from various regions ranging from riverine areas, polluted soil, oil spillage sites, industrial sites, agricultural sites and so on (Zheng et al, 2020;Gao et al, 2018;Jiao et al, 2015;Sun et al, 2015;Li et al, 2015;Asagbra et al, 2015;Sun et al, 2015;Yu et al, 2015;Wang et al, 2013;Li et al, 2011;Lau et al, 2010;Ogunfowokan et al, 2003). Developed and developing countries have being paying much attention as a result of the adverse effects they pose to the ecosystem, animals and human health.…”

“…Species identification and its genetic structure are a crucial issue for the economic importance of C. gariepinus. The traditional method of the characterization of Clarias gariepinus has been used to evaluate this species, and it has not been found to be a reliable method for species identification (Asagbra et al, 2014). Molecular markers such as Random Amplified Polymorphic DNA are used for the genetic identification of fish species.…”

“…Various authors have seen RAPD analysis as the basis for determining polymorphisms based on allele frequency and amplification of DNA segments with a single primer of the arbitrary nucleotide sequence. The levels of DNA polymorphisms can be detected using this method by the presence or absence of amplification products when two strains or individuals are compared (Williams et al, 1990;Ali et al, 2004;Soufy et al, 2009;Asagbra et al, 2014).…”

“…RAPD markers have been used to evaluate the genetic diversity in numerous organisms and on fish populations belonging to the same family or genus (Cooper, 2000;Ali et al, 2004;Usman et al, 2013;Megbowon and FashinaBombata, 2013;Asagbra et al, 2014) RAPD markers can be used for species and sex identification in animals (Appannavar et al, 2003;Huang et al, 2003).…”
