Genetic Characterization of Some Saudi Arabia’s Accessions from Commiphora gileadensis Using Physio-Biochemical Parameters, Molecular Markers, DNA Barcoding Analysis and Relative Gene Expression

Abstract: Commiphora gileadensis L. is a medicinal plant, known as balsam, with pharmaceutical potential for its phytochemical activities and chemical constituents. Genetic diversity is a genetic tool used in medicinal plant evolution and conservation. Three accessions from C. gileadensis were collected from three localities in Saudi Arabia (Jeddah, Jizan and Riyadh). Genetic characterization was carried out using physio-biochemical parameters, molecular markers (inter-simple sequence repeat (ISSR) and start codon targe… Show more

“…These decreases might be attributed to the overproduction of reactive oxygen species which caused oxidative damage to the membranes lipids and elevated the content of malondialdehyde (Abd El Moneim 2020). Accordingly, it is decisive to enhance tolerance to drought stress of different crops to ensure sustainable agriculture and food security (Safhi et al, 2022). In this regard, Desoky et al (2021b) treated potato plants externally with stimulating adjuvants such as clove fruit extract (CFE) and/or salicylic acid (SA) to enable them to overcome the water deficit stress.…”

“…Water deficit is one of the most threatening environmental stresses that restrict plant development and growth, causing considerable losses in crop productivity (Essa et al, 2023). It causes detrimental impacts on biochemical, molecular, physiological, and morphological aspects of the plant that deleteriously impact crop productivity and quality (ALshamrani et al, 2022). Numerous biochemical, molecular, physiological, and morphological processes in the plants are extremely impaired under drought stress due to oxidative stress, ion toxicity, and nutrient deficiency, resulting in poor plant performance (Hill et al, 2021).…”

“…The agroecological zone of the southwestern regions of Saudi Arabia is characterized by three agroclimatic zones and ten subzones defined by geographic location and topography that differ in rainfall and air temperature [ 22 ]. High altitudes are characterized by lower temperatures and higher rainfall (400–450 mm per year), making vegetation more diverse [ 23 ].…”

“…Other olive cultivars have shown similar adaptations such as the cultivars 'Madural', and 'Cobrançosa' (Bacelar et al, 2004;Alowaiesh, 2007), which displayed high performance under drought stress conditions. In addition, real-time quantitative PCR (RT-qPCR) analysis was applied due to its precise sequence-specificity and ability to increase sample throughput (Tian et al, 2015;Safhi et al, 2022;Mesfer et al, 2022). The evaluated cultivars displayed significant variations in the gene expressions of CAT, DHN, and DERB.…”
