Genetic comparison of mouse lung telocytes with mesenchymal stem cells and fibroblasts

Abstract: Telocytes (TCs) are interstitial cells with telopodes – very long prolongations that establish intercellular contacts with various types of cells. Telocytes have been found in many organs and various species and have been characterized ultrastructurally, immunophenotypically and electrophysiologically (http://www.telocytes.com). Telocytes are distributed through organ stroma forming a three-dimensional network in close contacts with blood vessels, nerve bundles and cells of the local immune system. Moreover, i… Show more

“…However, in recent years, this view has rapidly changed because of the identification of a peculiar stromal cell type, the telocyte (telos, i.e . provided with long‐distance cell projections), that appears definitely distinct from the classical fibroblasts . The peculiar ultrastructural phenotype is currently considered as the most reliable hallmark for these cells, which do not possess a unique antigenic profile .…”

“…Zheng et al (2013) show examples of electron-dense connecting bridging structures between TCs and other cells including stem cells. Perhaps these nanotubes may also transport exosomes between cells.…”

“…TCs are not fibroblasts or mesenchymal stem cells [53,54]. Among the most important functions of the TCs, we can mention that of integrators of many intercellular signaling processes (for details see our latest review [55]).…”
