Genetic differences in periovum sensitivity to hyaluronidase and protease between C57BL/6, BALB and CXB recombinant mice

Abstract: The cumulus oophorus surrounding eggs from C57BL/6 mice was digested by bovine or leech hyaluronidase significantly more rapidly than that surrounding eggs from BALB/c mice. The zona pellucida of C57BL/6 eggs was also more rapidly attacked by pronase. Three other sublines of C57BL showed the same characteristics. Measurements of susceptibility to hyaluronidase and pronase on eggs from the CXB recombinant inbred strains indicated that variation at a minimum of 2 loci affected each character. The lack of correla… Show more

“…The experiments performed on B10.BR and BALB/c strains and their reciprocal Fl and F2 hybrids described here confirmed the results obtained by Bander et al (1988Bander et al ( , 1989. Those authors interpreted the paternal inheritance of cumulus cell dispersal as a result of imprinting of the paternal genome, Xchromosome linked and cytoplasmic effects being excluded.…”

“…The mean hyaluronidase times for the F 2 crosses closely resembled those of their paternal and grand paternal stocks. The recombinant inbred strains included one with a short hyaluronidase time, CXBD, and two with long hyaluronidase times, CXBE and CXBJ (Bander et al 1988). Eggs were obtained from female mice that had been cross fostered between the parental strains or between reciprocal F 1 matings.…”

“…The eggs of C57BL mice, of several sublines, are known to be relatively susceptible to enzymic attack in vitro (Braden, 1958;Krzanowska, 1972;Nicol & McLaren, 1974;Bander et al 1988). For traits differing between strains this would result in differences between the Fj mice produced by reciprocal crosses between the strains.…”

“…The C57BL/6 and BALB/c strains were chosen for comparison because of reproductive and behavioural differences (McGill & Manning, 1976;Shire & Whitten, 1980;Shire, 1984;Bander et al, 1988) and differences in the post-natal development of gonads and other endocrine organs (Shukri & Shire, 1986;Janat & Shire, 1987;Shukri et al, 1988).
