Genetic evaluation of Pinus taeda clones from somatic embryogenesis and their genotype x environment interaction

Abstract: The objective of this study was to evaluate the genotype x environment interaction and to estimate the genetic components of variance and mean using mixed models in early selection of 238 clones of Pinus taeda propagated by somatic embryogenesis. The experiment consisted of a complete blocks design, with 12 replications, with one plant per plot, in four environments, at 1, 3, and 4 years of age. Estimates of heritability and of genetic gains in the evaluated environments showed good prospects for selection of … Show more

“…However, such an interaction can be more complex, because, despite the soil and climate factors, it can be related to origin, provenance, genetic material propagation form, among other factors. Dias et al (2018) carried out a clonal test with P. taeda, in individuals at the age of four years, and found low correlation (0.49) among the four tested locations. They mention that clonal trials tend to present higher genotype x environment interaction than trials planted with progenies originated from seeds.…”

“…Most P. taeda plantations in Brazil are originated from seedlings; thus, breeding programs are set to produce genetically improved seeds in seed orchards. Therefore, the genetic selection of individuals and use of the best silvicultural techniques are essential to get high productivity in multi-environmental situations (DIAS et al, 2018;DVORAK, 2012).…”

“…Understanding stability and adaptability enables the identification of productive, stable, and adaptable genotypes (Silva et al, 2019). However, evaluating GE interaction is one of the most costly aspects of a breeding program (Dias et al, 2018), especially for perennial fruit trees such as T. grandiflorum, where the breeding cycle can last up to 15 years (Alves et al 2021). This may explain why studies on GE interaction in T. grandiflorum are extremely rare.…”
