ABSTRACT:The objective of this study was to evaluate the efficiency of the phenotypic models of competition, through spatial analysis in the genetic evaluation of Pinus taeda L progenies. For this, four competition covariates were used to adjust the phenotypic values in a P. taeda progeny test installed in four different locations in the state of Santa Catarina. The test was implemented in randomized block design, with seven repetitions, linear plots containing six plants per plot in 2.5 m x 2.0 m spacing. The test installed in sites A, B, and D present 63 families and site C 53 families. At nine years old, the diameter at the breast height was measured for all individuals. The presence or absence of competition was based on the residual autocorrelation coefficients, which had its significance tested by the Durbin-Watson test. In general, the use of covariates corrected the competition effect. The variances among and within plots, as well as the residual variation coefficient, were reduced. The classification by the genetic effect of the individuals in the progeny test was extremely altered for this data set with and without the use of covariates for sites A and D, as well as the genotype x environment interaction. The use of these two tools is of great importance in the analysis of data in P. taeda progeny tests, since the effects of competition can lead to mistakes in the selection of individuals and in the definition of improvement zones.
Forest species breeding programs require a long period-of-time for plants to reach the proper age to enable selecting superior genotypes, which is a critical factor in selection processes. Thus, the aims of the current study are to estimate genetic parameters in juvenile and adult plants (6, 10 and 20 years) in order to investigate genetic correlations between variables at different ages and at certain ages; as well as to determine whether it is possible performing efficient early selection in juvenile plants. The test was implemented in 1997; it comprised 120 progenies and followed a randomized block design, with five repetitions - linear plots comprised 5 plants at 2.5 m x 2.5 m spacing. DBH (cm), H (m) and VOL (m³) of all tested subjects were measured at the age of 6, 10 and 20 years. Variance components, genetic parameters, as well as genetic correlations between variables and between ages were estimated in Selegen REML/BLUP® software. Genetic parameter estimates have shown superiority at 10 years, in comparison to that estimated at 6 and 20 years. Variable ‘DBH’ has shown high genetic correlation to height (H) and volume (VOL), whereas DBH x VOL have shown high genetic correlation (0.98) in 10-year-old plants. With respect to genetic correlation between ages, 10-year-old plants have shown moderate correlation to 6- and 20-year-old plants. Early selection is indicated for 10-year-old plants, in 20-year cycles, since plants at this age have shown higher selection efficiency to predict gains in comparison to adult plants.
Aim of study: To define an early selection strategy based on tests applied to full-sibling progenies of Pinus caribaea var. hondurensis grown in the Cerrado Biome. Area of study: Prata region (MG), Brazil. Material and methods: Progeny tests were cultivated in 2006; the study followed a completely randomized design, with 79 families of full-siblings and 15 repetitions, with one plant per plot. Thinning was carried out at the age of 6 and 8 years; 615 individuals and 44 families were included in the test. The following quantitative variables were used in the statistical analysis of data on the remaining individuals: diameter at breast height (DBH) in cm, total height (H) in m, and volume in dm³ at the age of 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 and 11 years. BLUP multi-trait multivariate model, with non-structured covariance structure matrix, was adopted for calculations. Main results: There were strong additive genetic correlations (above 90%) between variables DBH and H, in all analyzed ages. Strong volume correlations were estimated based on the age group over four years; volume selection efficiency reached its peak at the age of five years. Selection based on volume at the age of 5 years leads to genetic gains in this variable; selection intensity values can range from 7.8% to 6.4% and 5.4%, and from 10% to 20% and 30%. Research highlights: The best strategy lies on carrying out the selections at the age of five years, based on 30% selection intensity.
